Ruskin Real Estate

Ruskin, FL

Ruskin, located in Hillsborough County, Florida, near Tampa’s South shore has blossomed since the early 2000’s. It’s population, which doubled from 2000 to 2010 now tops 17,000 residents.

The community was founded on August 7, 1908 on the shores of the Little Manatee River. Dr. George Miller, an attorney and professor at Ruskin College in Trenton, Missouri, and Mrs. Adaline Miller developed the community in its infancy. It was named after John Ruskin and was originally somewhat of a social experiment in his philosophical views.

The area began as an agricultural community, with many tomato farms. Today, it has evolved into a suburban community, particularly in the last two decades.

The community grew up around U.S. Route 41, which was only a 9-foot-wide road in the 1920s. Now U.S. Route 41 has become a 4-lane highway, and along with I-75, makes it easy for commuters to reach Tampa’s city limits.

Ruskin has about 3,000 households and nearly 30 percent have children under the age of 18. Over 50% of its residents are married couples and 30 percent are non-families. Over 26 percent of the population is under 18 years of age, while close to 27 percent are ages 18 to 24. Just under 50 percent of Ruskin residents are 25 and older. The median age for the community is 35 years of age.
