In the 1940s Peru became part of Riverview. So both the north and south side of the Alafia River are known as Riverview today. A ferry provided the first means of transportation from one shore to the other, but eventually a bridge was constructed to make travel from one side to the other easier.

Alafia means “River of Fire” and the river received the name because of the phosphorus that glowed at night on the river’s bottom.
